SUN-MI HONG BIDA ORCHESTRA
Invisible Ropes
The creation of new material can often feel like entering a dark cave clutching onto our ideas as if they are our flashlight. This test is beautiful. It brings out material previously unknown, confronts and -whats more - celebrates our weaknesses.
Drummer Sun-Mi Hong has gathered a previously unseen constellation of personalities for her edition of BIMHUIS Reflex Series. The last few years has seen Sun-Mi exploring the corners of the European scene while further expanding her musical pallet. This project is a testament to that journey. Sun-Mi has invited an extremely versatile group of six improvisers and artists.
Three horns, double bass, piano/synth and drums. This instrumentation, in combination with the characters involved, allow endless opportunity in terms of texture and dynamics. From linear serenity, to choppy waters and blood curdling screams. Expect to have the carpet pulled out from under you.

Quotes:
Sun-Mi invoked the rampantly rebellious spirit of 1970s and ‘80s British free jazz, sounding old school in a way which injected that approach with vivified energies. (...) Sun-Mi is more abstract than ever, completely feeling the pulse while she drops heart-quickening detonations. As strong as her hits are, Sun-Mi maintains a skin-and-metal sensitivity supreme. Jazzwise/UK
This could well be the most dynamic and exciting group Sun-Mi has been on stages with recently. As a young Korean-Dutch drummer with admirable versatility, she has already firmly established herself in the global drumming top. She can quietly elevate an intimate performance for an evening with some subtly placed taps or gentle rustling with the brushes, but the times I heard her ferocious polyrhythmic outbursts made the most impression.
